Screening Landscapes: Film between the Picturesque and the Painterly

Abstract Inherently connected to movement and a sequential spatial experience in time, the picturesque has been considered as precursor of cinematic. In addition, idea is closely Heinrich Wölfflin’s notion das Malerische or “the painterly,” which stands for dynamic style painting characterized by qualities colour, stroke, texture rather than contour line. Based on keynote lecture delivered at conference, The Picturesque: Visual Pleasure Intermediality in-between Contemporary Cinema, Art Digital Culture (Sapientia Hungarian University Transylvania, 25–26 October, 2019), 1 essay disentangles complex network connections between image landscape, film, painterly.
